Seasonal skin changes: what you need to know

  • 4 min read

Your skin is not only the largest organ of your body, but also one of the most dynamic, constantly reacting to external factors like the weather, humidity, and temperature.

As the seasons shift and temperatures change, your skin faces different challenges, often requiring a seasonal focus for your skincare. Understanding these seasonal skin changes can help you maintain healthy, glowing skin year-round.

Winter: a season of dryness and dullness

As the cold nights draw in and the weather shifts, dry and dull skin are unfortunate companions. The colder winter air is notoriously drying for your skin, often leaving it feeling flaky, tight, and sensitive. The cold weather reduces moisture levels in the air, making it harder for your skin to stay hydrated.

As well as the colder air, indoor heating can further deplete your skin’s natural moisture levels, causing dry patches, redness, and irritation. Oftentimes, people with sensitive skin or conditions like eczema find these symptoms are exacerbated in winter.

Our top tip: don’t forget your SPF in winter! Just because it might be cold doesn’t mean that UVA and UVB rays aren’t reaching your skin. If you’ve had snowfall, be careful of the snow reflecting the UV rays.

Supporting dry and dull skin with UpCircle

Our bestselling Organic Face Oil with Coffee works to hydrate the skin, and boost collagen. Infused with nourishing jojoba, sea buckthorn and rosehip oils, this face oil also locks in the moisture provided by any moisturisers and serums you’ve already used through occlusion.

This face oil is formulated with coffee oil extracted from upcycled coffee grounds from London cafés, helping to make your skin glow.

How to use: Apply a few drops to your fingertips and massage into your skin. It’s important to apply the face oil after applying moisturiser. The formula is completely oil-based so it works through occlusion, locking in the hydration provided by the moisturiser by forming a protective seal over your skin. YouTube

Spring: a season of sensitivity

While spring often brings relief from the dryness of winter, it is a season of transition. As your skin adjusts to warmer temperatures and increased humidity, it can become sensitive

This season is also known for an uptick in environmental allergens like pollen, which can cause flare-ups of conditions like rosacea or acne, especially if you have sensitive or reactive skin.

Adding antioxidants to your routine can help to protect your skin from environmental aggressors like UV rays and pollution while brightening the complexion.

Summer: a season of oiliness

While we may revel in seeing some sunshine, the additional heat and humidity can wreak havoc on your skin. Skin often becomes more oily, leading to clogged pores, breakouts, and an overall shinier appearance.

The increased exposure to the sun can also result in sunburns, hyperpigmentation, and signs of premature ageing if proper sun protection isn’t practised. For some, acne tends to flare up during the summer months due to the combination of sweat, sunscreen, and oil buildup.

Top tip: Drinking enough water is key for maintaining your skin’s elasticity and preventing dehydration, which can occur more easily in hot weather.

Autumn: a season of repair

With the change of season, your skin may need some recovery time. After months of sun exposure, you might experience uneven skin tone, hyperpigmentation, or dryness as temperatures begin to cool.

Autumn is a time when your skin starts to dry out again, preparing for the cold months ahead. During this time, it’s important to work on protecting and maintaining your skin barrier. Your skin barrier protects your skin against environmental stressors while preventing your skin from losing water due to evaporation.
