The wonderful thing about clean beauty is that by its very nature it is incredibly simple. You do not need to be a bio-chemist or dermatologist to navigate your way around natural, clean beauty.

You would be amazed to realise how many brilliant and effective skin and hair care treatments you can create from simple ingredients that you most probably already have in your kitchen!

The hero ingredient in the following recipes is definitely coconut oil. It is incredibly versatile and its effects are astounding. When I first discovered using coconut as makeup remover I could not believe just how good it was.

So without further ado, here are some of our absolute favourite DIY beauty recipes:

Whipped Coconut Body Butter

Coconut Oil

Shea Butter

Olive oil / Almond Oil

Essential oil of choice

Melt some coconut oil with some shea butter and either olive oil or almond oil, so that all are combined. You can do this by boiling water in a pan and placing the ingredients in a bowl above the pan.

Once the ingredients are combined as liquid put the mixture in the fridge to cool. When they have returned a solid - but are still soft, use a hand mixer to whip up the mixture.

As you mix add a few drops of your choice of essential oil and continue to mix until the texture becomes light and fluffy. My favourites for this recipe are patchouli, rose or lavender.

Place into a container and refrigerate for up to an hour longer. Voila!

Lip Scrub

Brown Sugar

Coconut Oil

This really couldn't be any simpler.

Mash up some coconut oil and mix in brown sugar, about a teaspoon of each is fine. If the grains of the sugar are too large then just continue to mash or use a pestle and mortar.

Apply to the lips and massage into the skin in circles.

The best thing about this recipe is that if it goes in your mouth it tastes nice and sweet!

Makeup Remover / Brush Cleaner

Coconut Oil

This is even more simple than the lip scrub. Yet for me, this was one of the most eye-opening discoveries! To remove makeup use about half a teaspoon of coconut oil on your fingertips, allow it to soften naturally on your skin and then apply to your face. Use a damp cotton wool pad or clean damp flannel / cloth to wipe off... and your makeup will come with it. Not even waterproof mascara stands a chance.

To use as a brush cleaner add a couple of tablespoons of warm water to some coconut oil. You can use an eco-friendly antibacterial soap as an alternative to the water if you like. Stir together before dabbing your brushes into the mixture. Once again, the makeup will just melt away. Rinse the brushes and place on a tea towel to dry.

Cacao and Avocado Mask

Half of a ripe avocado

Coconut Oil

Cacao powder

Soften / melt some coconut oil. Mash in half an avocado with a tablespoon of cacao powder.

Apply to a clean face and neck and try your best not to eat it all off your face before rinsing off 15 minutes later.

Hair Mask

Coconut Oil

Liberally apply coconut oil to towel dried hair, focusing on the mid-lengths to ends. The longer you leave it the better, so if possible wrap your hair, place a towel on your pillow and sleep with the oil in overnight.
