Traditionally, spring is a time of renewal after the winter’s stillness, and typically as a time to clean our homes and get them in good shape. It’s a love or hate task but at some point, it must happen!
While we all understand that keeping our houses clean and hygienic is essential, we also need to acknowledge the detrimental effects our habits, cleaning products and methods might have on the environment.
In this blog, we’ll highlight some sustainable spring cleaning tips to reduce your carbon footprint as well as create a cleaner and newer home!
Whenever you clean, opt for reusable cloths, towels, mops, and other cleaning tools rather than disposable ones like paper towels. This equates to over 300 million tons of plastic that end up in landfill each year worldwide. With that in mind, consider switching your cleaning products to more sustainable alternatives. You can even reuse old clothes, towels, sheets, etc. as cleaning rags to save money and reduce your carbon footprint! This is a great way to extend the life of your fabrics.
When doing a deep clean, many of us are unaware of the toxic chemicals cleaning sprays have on the environment, wildlife, and us! Making your own spray using natural ingredients is a great eco-friendly alternative which is easy on the planet and easy on your wallet!

Tip 3: Repair old items

Repairments can massively help prevent items from entering landfills so instead of tossing everything that is old and broken, let your creativity run wild!
Tip 4: Reduce your water usage
The process of cleaning consumes a lot of water, which is a finite resource.
Water usage can be reduced by the following:
- Using concentrated, biodegradable, environmentally friendly products.
- Turning off the taps in between cleaning
- Shower efficiently by setting a timer of 5 minutes to keep your showers, short, sweet and water-saving
- Save up your dirty clothes by washing a full machine load of clothes
- If you have a dishwasher, use it over washing dishes by hand. The dishwasher uses 4 gallons of water per cycle while hand washing can use up to 20 gallons of water!
