Caring for mature skin – our top tips

As we get older, not everything stays the same. However, with skincare we tend to get into a routine and stick with it. This makes sense, but we do need to review it from time to time and sometimes take a different approach in order to look after our skin. Here we share with you our top tips for mature skin care and our recommendations of natural skin care products for mature skin.

Mature skin care tips and the best natural skin care products to use

1. Cleanse gently and thoughtfully

As your skin matures, it loses moisture. The cleansing process can exacerbate dryness. It’s therefore important to choose a cleanser that is gentle. It’s still vital to remove your make-up and dirt from the day, but you need to be a little more thoughtful about how to do it. Go slowly, and treat your skin with care.

The UpCircle Cleansing Balm is one of the best skin care products for mature sensitive skin, but it is suitable for use by everyone. The calming blackcurrant seed, blue tansy and sea buckthorn oils are kind and soothing to sensitive skin.

The balm is wonderfully rich in the antioxidant Vitamin E from the repurposed finely-ground apricot stones. This helps aid against collagen loss, a notable issue for mature skin.

2. Exfoliate, but not too often

Exfoliation helps to reduce the appearance of fine lines because it removes the build-up of dead skin cells. However, too much and you can irritate your skin. When you exfoliate your face, continue down under your chin and around your neck.

We recommend using a gentle exfoliator such as the Floral Blend Coffee Face Scrub. This will buff your skin without aggravating it in any way, and is particularly good for dry or dehydrated skin.

Don’t forget to exfoliate the rest of your body, particularly the backs of your arms. You’ll see that this helps your skin to be more vibrant. Try the Coffee Body Scrub with Lemongrass. It contains coconut oil and shea butter which helps to moisturise at the same time.

3. Benefit from hyaluronic acid

It sounds like it’s not natural, or even particularly kind, but hyaluronic acid is both. Hyaluronic acid is big news in skin care – we urge you to read all about the amazing benefits of hyaluronic acid. We naturally produce it in our skin, but we produce less as we age. We need it for locking in moisture.

The good news is that our skin will readily absorb hyaluronic acid from the outside. A fantastic way to do this is by using a Face Toner. Face toner can be used as part of your morning and evening routine, but it can also be spritzed on during the day when your skin is feeling a little flat and dull.

The hyaluronic acid will plump the skin whilst the chamomile and green mandarin will soothe, making it one of the best skin care products for mature sensitive skin.

4. Look after the skin around your eyes

As we age, the skin around your eyes needs particular attention. Again, if you haven’t used an eye cream before, now is the time to make one part of your routine.

Eye cream is designed to target the skin around the eyes with a hydrating hit. It will help to ensure you aren’t plagued by dark circles and ‘bags’. The more you use it as part of your routine, the more you will notice the benefits.

Eye cream should be used morning and evening and dabbed on gently with your fingertips. Consistently positively rated, our Eye Cream is perfect for mature skin.

5. Moisturise

Moisturising has probably been part of your skin care routine to date. However, it can be worth reconsidering your chosen moisturiser as your skin goes through the natural changes of time. Ideally you need to find a lightweight face cream that you can also use on your neck and upper chest area. These areas are prone to showing fine lines and being dry and more fragile.

Rich in Vitamin E, our Face Moisturiser is a wonderful natural skin care product for mature skin. It uses the fine powder of discarded argan shells combined with beautifully soothing cocoa butter, aloe vera and blood orange.

This moisturiser can also be used morning and night, making it a versatile part of your skincare regime. There’s no need to reach for highly-marketed anti-wrinkle night creams which are packed with artificial ingredients. However, applying moisturiser after an evening cleanse is an ideal way of ensuring your beauty sleep is maximised and your skin feels better for it.

For the rest of your body, choose a hydrating body cream. A key ingredient in our popular Body Moisturiser is date seeds, which are composed of polyphenols and other antioxidants. Known as a ‘super seed’, the extract is very high in antioxidants and acts as an anti-inflammatory. Its ability to calm redness, even out skin tone, and protect skin makes it perfect for mature skin. It also helps to minimise the appearance of thin blood vessels by inducing vasoconstriction. This makes it a great treatment for varicose veins.

6. Make serum your new friend

If you’ve not used a serum previously, now is the time to start. It’s brilliant for locking in moisture to skin, ensuring it looks plump and fresh.

We really do recommend all natural skin care for mature skin (and all skin for that matter!). This Face Serum fits the bill being organic, 100% natural, vegan, sustainable and cruelty-free. It’s rich in Vitamin C and is immensely hydrating. It will boost collagen and aids mature skin by helping to keep it firm.

Using serum is also a wonderful way to indulge and pamper yourself. It feels luxurious with its delightful geranium, rose and lemon essential oils. Use it morning and night after you apply a moisturiser.

If reading the above has made you realise that you need to overhaul your entire skin care regime as your skin has matured, don’t panic. You can either introduce one change at a time, or you can benefit from our Mature Skin Care Bundle which includes everything you need to get started. In the bundle are our cleansing face balm, eye cream, face toner, body cream, face serum and moisturiser.
